Former New York Governor’s aide charged with spying for China

A spy case in New York State is stirring up controversy in the United States. A former aide to the state’s two most recent governors is accused of favoring the interests of her home country, China, and, in turn, her own.

For 15 years, Linda Sun, a naturalized American citizen born in China, worked in the entourage of the governor of the State of New York. First with Andrew Cuomo as head of diversity issues, then after his departure in that of the current governor, also a Democrat, Kathy Hochul, until becoming his deputy chief of staff.

But Linda Sun used her position and influence to further the interests of her country of birth by preventing Taiwanese officials from accessing New York officials. Instead, she allegedly made it easier for Chinese officials to travel to American soil, to be received, or by giving them documents bearing the New York State seal without authorization.

But investigators also discovered that Linda Sun was not acting solely out of loyalty to her homeland. Her husband, Christian Hu, received financing that clearly helped his business career. The result was an apartment worth nearly $2 million in Hawaii, a house worth more than $4 million on Long Island, near New York, and a 2024 Ferrari.

New York Governor Kathy Hochul says Sun has not worked for her since late 2023, when her actions were discovered and reported to the courts.
