C’is a first since 2021. The British royal family sent a birthday message on X to Prince Harry, who turns 40 this Sunday, September 15. After years of tension, a first step towards reconciliation?
“We wish the Duke of Sussex a very happy birthday,” the royal family’s official account posted on Sunday morning. The same message was later shared on X by Prince William and his wife, Princess Kate.

While these birthday wishes are laconic, they had not been broadcast for three years, in 2021. The year when Prince Harry and his wife Meghan claimed in a sensational interview with Oprah Winfrey, that a member of the royal family had wondered, when Meghan was pregnant, about the skin color that their son Archie would have.
A birthday in California
The final blow came in early 2023 with the publication of Spare (The Substitute), the prince’s uncompromising and unfiltered autobiography, highly critical of the royal family. A sign of these tensions, the last public appearance with Prince Harry and his brother William dates back to September 2022, for the funeral of Queen Elizabeth II.
