Djokovic’s Serbia saves in play-off against Greece

Serbia saved their place in the Davis Cup World Group with a 3-0 victory over Greece in a play-off, following the success of the Novak Djokovic/Hamad Medjedovic pairing in Belgrade on Sunday.

The 37-year-old former world No. 1 and his 21-year-old teammate won 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 against Aristotelis Thanos and Petros Tsitsipas, Stefanos’ younger brother, who withdrew.

On Saturday, Miomir Kecmanovic had given Serbia the first point by beating Thanos (6-3, 6-3), before “Nole”, holder of the number of Grand Slam titles (24), doubled the lead against Ioannis Xilas (6-0, 6-1).

With this victory, Serbia remains in the Davis Cup World Group and will be able to claim the final stages next year.

But Djokovic, who has fallen to fourth in the world, said on Saturday that it was “perhaps the last time” he would take part in a Davis Cup match in Belgrade because of the change in the competition’s format.

“Young players who will defend the colours of the national team must take up the torch,” he explained.
