Will parents (again) have to dig into their pockets?

Every year, it is an obligation. Parents who want their children to be able to eat at the school canteen must register and pay the fixed fee to the establishment. This year, 82% of school children will go to the canteen and this expense represents a significant weight in the expenses to be expected at the start of the school year. And over the last two years, prices have been pushed up by inflation, reports Actu.fr.

Indeed, the price increase, which has caused food prices to soar by 20%, has had a major impact on the menu budget. Interviewed by the website, Gilles Pérole, co-chair of the School Catering working group at the Association of Mayors of France, indicated that the cost price of a meal amounted to “8.49 euros per student in 2023, compared to 7.63 euros in 2020”. This must also be added to the increase in energy prices. However, prices should stabilize this year.

The new draft finance bill for 2025, which must be submitted to Parliament by October 1, could, however, change the situation. Indeed, Gilles Pérole fears that the State, which is seeking to make savings, will further reduce its support for local authorities, in charge of primary schools. And that’s not all, the Egalim law now requires municipalities to offer 50% sustainable food, including at least 20% organic products, which could lead to additional costs.
