In Chad, after the floods, businesses close due to lack of customers

In Chad, some economic activities have been at a standstill for almost a month because of the floods that have hit the country. Faced with this situation, traders are forced to close shop due to lack of customers. A situation that is also hurting Chadian consumers.

With our correspondent in Ndjamena, Olivier Monodji

Natacha Béra, a forty-something, unemployed teacher and mother of five, has had a hard time shopping for several weeks. The grocery store she usually goes to, in the 7th arrondissement of Ndjamena, closed its doors at the end of July. Under water, it was inaccessible.

« We live on the basis of shops. But currently, we don’t have a road, that people will come to buy things with us. Finally, we are blocked, so I stayed at home. Now, I don’t know what to do to register my children in school “, says Natacha.

In the 1st arrondissement, Aldom Moussa, a ready-to-wear salesman, is unhappy: he is cleaning dusty clothes while mumbling. His turnover has dropped, while he has to pay the municipal tax and the rent for the last two months.

Economic operators are seeking government support to help them get through this and restart their activities.
