Grenoble municipal officer shot dead after trying to restrain accident perpetrator

A municipal officer was fatally shot on Sunday morning in Grenoble after trying to prevent the perpetrator of a traffic accident from fleeing, said public prosecutor Eric Vaillant.

“Following a traffic accident near Grenoble town hall this morning at around 7:30 a.m., the person responsible for the accident fired two shots at a municipal employee who allegedly tried to prevent him from fleeing,” the prosecutor’s office said, confirming information from the newspaper Le Dauphiné Libéré.

The shooter on the run

Early Sunday afternoon, the Grenoble prosecutor announced the death of the municipal employee, a cleaning agent according to the press. The latter was apparently working at the time of the events and had received two bullets in the chest, the prosecutor said.

According to the regional daily Le Dauphiné Libéré, the altercation occurred at the scene of the accident between a Peugeot vehicle and an Audi that hit it. The shooter’s vehicle was an Audi RS3 with a Polish license plate, Vaillant said.

“The prosecution has referred the investigation to the SLPJ police in Grenoble, who are actively looking for the shooter,” added the same source, specifying that the shooter’s identity is not known at this stage.
