First case of bird flu without animal contact in the United States

The adult, hospitalized in Missouri on August 22, was tested positive after extensive testing. So far, the cases of bird flu in humans in the country were linked to agriculturemainly in contact with poultry.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) clarified this Friday, September 6, that no transmission among the patient’s relatives has been detected, thus minimizing the immediate risk to the population. However, experts are concerned about the rise in infections in mammals, fearing a mutation of the virus that would allow transmission from human to human.

The World Health Organization (WHO) said it was reassured by the rapid detection of the case thanks to the American surveillance system. The patient was treated with an antiviral and no other cases have been reported among his contacts. However, the WHO stresses the importance of continuing investigations to better understand the conditions of this infection.

This announcement follows an outbreak of bird flu in the United States, marked by unusual infections in cows, particularly in Texas, where a human case was identified in April. Despite these developments, the CDC believes that the risk to the general public remains low.
