The tragedy that occurred Wednesday was part of a macabre series in the United States, which has long been hit by school and university shootings. The suspect is accused of killing two students and two teachers at Apalachee High School in Winder, about 70 kilometers northeast of Atlanta.
“We are on the second day of a very complex investigation and compliance with procedure is essential”the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) said, adding that autopsies of the victims were scheduled for Thursday.
A weapon given to him by his father
The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office, where the shooting took place, has released a portrait of the young man, as reported by American media.
According to CNN on Thursday, citing anonymous sources, the weapon used was an AR-15 assault rifle – a name often mentioned in such dramas – and had been given by the teenager’s father as a gift to his son.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation confirmed the father’s involvement when it announced his arrest late Thursday. Colin Gray, 54, is charged with four counts of involuntary manslaughter because he “allowed his son, Colt, to own a gun”explained the GBI director at a press conference.
The injured are out of danger
The FBI said just hours after the shooting that Gray Colt had already been in the authorities’ sights a year earlier, because of a message posted on the Discord messaging service in which he allegedly threatened to shoot up a school.
During the investigation, his father responded, according to documents consulted by the Associated Press agency: “He knows the dangers of weapons and knows what they can do, he knows how to use them and how not to use them.” For his part, the teenager denied being the source of these writings and affirmed that he would never make such remarks. “even if it was a joke”.
Two students were killed at Apalachee High School: Christian Angulo and Mason Schermerhorn, both 14. The other victims were teachers at the school, Christina Irimie, 53, and Richard Aspinwall, 39. The injured are now out of danger.
