The United States is the only developed country where school shootings, such as the one that rocked a Georgia high school on Wednesday, killing at least four people, are repeated.

Here are the major recent school and university shootings, as well as the deadliest in American history.

– Las Vegas, Nevada, December 6, 2023 –

A 60-year-old man opened fire and killed at least three people on the campus of the University of Las Vegas before being killed by police.

– Nashville, Tennessee, 27 mars 2023 –

A 28-year-old transgender person opens fire at Covenant School, a small Christian school in Nashville, the capital of Tennessee. Three children and three adults are killed.

– Uvalde, Texas, May 24, 2022 –

19 children and two teachers are victims of a horrific massacre at their school in Uvalde, Texas, committed by an 18-year-old man using a legally purchased assault rifle.

– Oxford, Michigan, November 30, 2021 –

A 15-year-old boy cold-bloodedly kills four students and wounds six others as well as a teacher on the grounds of Oxford High School, a small town north of Detroit. The perpetrator of the shooting is charged with “terrorist act” and “murder” and, unusually, his parents are also prosecuted. They are sentenced to several years in prison.

– Santa Clarita, Californie, November 14, 2019 –

A 16-year-old boy marked his birthday by shooting at students at his high school, killing two classmates and wounding three others before attempting suicide. The victims are between the ages of 14 and 15.

– Santa Fe, Texas, May 18, 2018 –

A 17-year-old student shot dead 20 people at his high school: two adults and eight young people died. The shooter has since been imprisoned.

– Parkland, Florida, February 14, 2018 –

On Valentine’s Day, 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz discharged his semi-automatic rifle at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, from which he had been suspended for disciplinary reasons.

Seventeen people were killed, most of them teenagers. The shooter has since been sentenced to life in prison.

– Benton, Kentucky, 23 janvier 2018 –

A 15-year-old student shot and killed two other students of the same age at Marshall County High School. Eighteen others were injured by gunfire or in the chaos caused by the shooting.

– Roseburg, Oregon, 1er octobre 2015 –

A 26-year-old student shoots nine people dead at Umpqua University. He is wounded and shoots himself in the head.

– Oakland, Californie, 2 avril 2012 –

A man methodically guns down seven people at the small Oikos University in California. The shooter, a former student, is arrested and dies seven years later in prison.

– Newtown, Connecticut, December 14, 2012 –

After shooting his mother, a 20-year-old man named Adam Lanza killed 26 people, including 20 children aged six and seven, at Sandy Hook Elementary School. He later committed suicide. The United States remains haunted by this massacre because of the many children killed.

– Virginia Tech University, Virginia, April 16, 2007 –

A deranged South Korean student killed 32 people with two semi-automatic pistols before committing suicide at the renowned university.

– Columbine, Colorado, 20 avril 1999 –

Two heavily armed Columbine High School students, aged 17 and 18, shot dead 12 classmates and a teacher in a matter of minutes before committing suicide in the library. The toll would have been even worse if they had managed to detonate their homemade bombs.

– Austin, Texas, August 1, 1966 –

A former Marine perched atop the tower of the main building of the University of Texas at Austin fired randomly for more than 90 minutes at everyone he saw below. He killed about 15 people and wounded about 30 before he was killed.
