There is still a lot of work to be done, but Cristiano Ronaldo has taken a small step towards the 1,000 career goal mark. At 39, the Portuguese player seems unlikely on paper to reach that number, but football is full of great stories. After scoring his 900th career goal a few days ago against Croatia, the Al-Nassr forward has done it again.

In Lisbon, Portugal faced Scotland on Sunday (2-1) in the Nations League group stages. From the bench, Cristiano Ronaldo first watched helplessly as the Scots opened the scoring via Scott McTominay in the 7th minute. Coming into play after the break, the former Real Madrid player saw his teammate Bruno Fernandes equalize before once again donning the savior’s costume.

Two minutes before the end of regulation time, Parisian Nuno Mendes sent a good cross that the five-time Ballon d’Or winner was able to cut away to give his team the victory.

1,000 goals… an achievable goal?

Thanks to this new success, Portugal concludes this international break perfectly with a first place in group 1 of League A with its six points, that is to say three more than Croatia and Poland who share the following places, while Scotland is content with a last position with zero points.

Under contract until June 2025 with Al-Nassr, Cristiano Ronaldo still has a little time to string together goals and try to get closer to the 1,000 goal mark, especially since the Saudi club would like to extend its star’s contract.

On his YouTube channel, the football legend humorously discussed the possibility of reaching this goal, all with a little dig at the late Brazilian Pelé: “I want to reach 900 goals first, then 1,000. But with one difference: all my goals are filmed, I have proof. I respect them all, but I have proof… If you want more goals, I can bring the ones scored in training too, it’s not a problem.”
