Columnist on RMC, Mehdi Ghezzar freewheeling on Morocco and André Azoulay

On social media, French and dual-national Internet users and political figures are increasing their calls for RMC to take action against Mehdi Ghezzar, after the latter appeared on Algerian public television, where he launched a diatribe against Morocco. Among the speakers on the show Les Grandes gueules on the French channel, the Algerian columnist spoke this time on AL24 News to make numerous accusations and denigrating remarks about Morocco, the Moroccan people, King Mohammed VI, and his advisor André Azoulay.

Highlighting the official’s Jewish faith, Mehdi Ghezzar notably spread false information about the censorship of Moroccans by the government regarding Palestine. According to him, demonstrations are banned in the kingdom, under a so-called “royal decree” that was allegedly defended by the advisor. However, pro-Palestinian rallies calling for the cancellation of normalization with Israel are held regularly in the country’s various cities.

However, in Algeria, the authorities have banned these demonstrations, in the context of the Israeli occupation war against the Gaza Strip. This silencing of the street was decided in anticipation of a possible shift from support demonstrations to gatherings with a political protest character, in the spirit of the Hirak.

In his campaigns against Morocco, Mehdi Ghezzar has previously mobilized even his wife, Hana Ghezzar Bouakkaz. Also working for RMC since 2023, the presenter notably played a role in hateful content implicating the kingdom in the controversy over Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, at the last 2024 Olympics.

RMC questioned on its position regarding the lies of its columnist

With untruths firmly in his body, the columnist this time mentioned “Zionist flies” that had caused Morocco to be “remote-controlled” by Israel and thus put “under the influence of a party foreign to the population”. According to him, this would be one of the reasons why Algeria would be targeted, being according to him “the only one” to have “resisted” the “Zionist diktat”. In the sequence relayed on the X platform, the interventions went so far as to claim that André Azoulay had Israeli nationality and that he himself had decided to censor the Moroccan people.

In France, these approximations have not gone unnoticed. On social networks, many dual nationals and actors in French public life have challenged the RMC channel, on which Mehdi Ghezzar has a free platform as part of the program Les Grandes gueules. President of the Republicans (LR), Eric Ciotti expressed his “total support for André Azoulay” for having been “shamefully attacked” on an Algerian media outlet. “His anti-Semitic remarks are unacceptable and despicable. I call on RMCInfo to immediately suspend this columnist who has also made infamous remarks against the Kingdom of Morocco,” he castigated.

Other Internet users called on viewers to contact the RMC program’s switchboard to directly question the columnist about his comments. Dominique Reynié, a political scientist and general director of the think tank La Fondation pour l’innovation politique (FondaPol), pointed out that AL24 News was an Algerian public television channel. “Everyone vents their anti-Semitism. Here, there is no subtext, no slip of the tongue, no need for a decoder, the programs are in the clear. And in French,” he denounced.

Naïma M’Faddel (LR member), who is responsible for the urban equity mission at the general management of services for the Eure-et-Loir department, described Mehdi Ghezzar as a “sinister character” who utters lies. “A mixture of anti-Semitism and anti-Moroccan hatred… he shouts his hatred,” she castigated, asking RMC if it supports the statements of the person concerned.
