5.3 magnitude earthquake shakes sea from Spain to Morocco

Party-goers in southeastern Europe, and even in Morocco, where early morning workers were not dreaming. Felt in several places, an earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale hit Portugal at dawn on Monday, without causing any casualties or damage, the national meteorological institute said. It was 5:11 a.m., at dawn, when the tremor was recorded. Its epicentre was located at sea, about 60 km west of the port city of Sines (south), the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) said.

“So far” no damage

The USGS seismological service announced that it had detected a tremor of magnitude 5.4 at a depth of 17.5 km in this region. The Spanish National Geographic Institute (IGN) reported that “the earthquake was felt in several places in Spain, particularly in Huelva (south), and in Morocco.”

“So far, we have not seen any personal or material damage,” said the national commander of the Portuguese civil protection, André Fernandes, at a press conference early this morning.
