“Yes, in Israel in 2024, one sometimes has the impression that there has been a kidnapping of the future”

EAt this moment, Israel finds itself at one of the most dramatic crossroads in its history. If the agreement on a ceasefire in Gaza and the release of the hostages evolves in a positive way, the chances of a lull in the north on the Hezbollah side will become more likely and it will be possible to concretize, under the leadership of the United States, a regional alliance between moderate countries against the “axis of evil” represented by Iran and its “proxies”. The State of Israel needs this alliance like oxygen. It could constitute the most effective response to this “axis of evil” which intends to take control of the Middle East first, then of Europe, in order to subject them to its fundamentalist version of Islam.

Yet, the Israeli Prime Minister chose to torpedo this agreement under the pretext that it would be harmful to the security of the country, going to the opposite extreme of what the military thinks. At the same time, 101 hostages who remained in Gaza are living hell and the number of survivors is decreasing day by day. Benjamin Netanyahu keeps repeating that only military pressure will bring them home. However, just recently, six young detainees were murdered by their captors as the army approached the area where they were being held, this after having survived three hundred and thirty days of detention.

It is important to emphasize that the Israeli Prime Minister is not the only person responsible for the catastrophic war that is continuing. The main one is Yahya Sinwar, the leader of Hamas. He is the planner and instigator of the monstrous attack of October 7 that targeted peaceful kibbutzim and a rave party where hundreds of young people were dancing. He is the one responsible for the abduction of women, children and old people from their beds and their detention in atrocious conditions.

Suffocating grip

And his sadistic cruelty has not only been directed at Israeli citizens, but also at the Palestinians in Gaza, at his own people. He deliberately and knowingly used civilians as human shields while his men launched missiles into Israel from hospitals, schools and shelters, instead of offering his people the shelter in the tunnels in order to save lives. Even today, when the people of Gaza are demanding an urgent ceasefire and reconstruction, Hamas is preventing a deal on the hostages, demonstrating that it does not care about the well-being of its people.
