State response to hate preachers

DECRYPTION – A new episode in a complex fight against Islamist separatism, the affair of the Marseille Bleuets mosque comes at a time when several places of worship have been closed in recent years.

The case of the Marseille Bleuets mosque, threatened with closure by the State if its controversial imam is not ousted, is only one of the latest episodes in the decades-long struggle between State services and radical Islam movements. A hushed and complex struggle where, in the current state of the law, serious threats to public order on one side and fundamental freedoms on the other are weighed up at the prefectural level and before the administrative courts. The aim for the authorities is to obtain the closure of the structures and/or the exclusion of the individuals targeted (imams, mosque presidents, association and business leaders, etc.).

In recent years, particularly under the authority of Gérald Darmanin, who arrived at the Ministry of the Interior in July 2020 – shortly before Emmanuel Macron’s speech in Les Mureaux and the wave of attacks in the fall – the State has significantly intensified its efforts in this area.
