Turkish President Erdogan welcomes Egyptian counterpart Sisi to Ankara for reconciliation visit

In mid-February in Cairo, Sissi and Erdogan had agreed on the opening of a «new page» in relations between their countries, which were abruptly broken off after the former came to power in 2013.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan welcomed his Egyptian counterpart Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to Ankara on September 4, an unprecedented visit aimed at burying a decade of estrangement between their two countries.

Erdogan, who was received in February in Cairo by Sissi, exchanged a handshake with the Egyptian leader as he got off the plane, according to images released by the Turkish presidency.

“Democracy killer”

The two men are expected to sign a series of agreements on Wednesday, before speaking to the press around 2 p.m., the Turkish presidency said. In mid-February in Cairo, Sisi and Erdogan had agreed to open a “new page” in relations between their countries, which were brutally broken off after Sisi came to power in 2013. Sisi’s dismissal of Egypt’s first democratically elected president, Mohamed Morsi, from the Muslim Brotherhood and a great ally of Turkey, led President Erdogan to swear that he would not speak “Never” has “someone like” Sissi.

The Turkish president later described his counterpart as«assassin» and of “killer of democracy”. But relations between the two men, who back two rival governments in Libya, have warmed in recent years. Their interests now converge on several regional issues, including the war in Gaza, which had been at the heart of their discussions in Cairo. Sisi and Erdogan, whose countries are important trading partners, said in February that they wanted to increase their trade “to 15 billion dollars per year in a few years”and also want to intensify their diplomatic cooperation in the Middle East and Africa.
