Russian strike on Lviv leaves at least seven dead – Libération

War between Ukraine and Russiadossier

At least seven people were killed and more than 40 injured after Russian strikes carried out at dawn on Wednesday, September 4, against the city of Lviv, in western Ukraine.

On the night of Tuesday to Wednesday, the Ukrainian air defense was on alert in the face of a new massive attack carried out by the Russian army. In Lviv, in the west of the country, at least seven people were killed and the provisional toll communicated by the authorities this Wednesday, September 4 in the early morning continues to evolve. More than forty civilians were also injured.

On social networks, many videos are being shared. The bombing took place in a residential area in the west of the city, not far from the central station. The fires caused by the various missile strikes and drone raids spread to the adjoining buildings. Around fifty buildings were damaged. After the images of the flames devouring the buildings during the night, there are those of gutted homes still smoking and ruins littering the streets. On X (formerly Twitter), Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky castigated the Kremlin and called for the delivery of “longer-range defense capabilities,” in order to answer “to the attacks of Russian terrorists.”

Located more than 1,000 km from the front and only 70 km from Poland, the Ukrainian city of 700,000 inhabitants has so far been relatively spared by the war. The deadliest attack on Lviv dates back to July 2023 when a Russian missile killed 10 people and injured more than 40.

More than 60 km north of the territories occupied by Russia, the city of Kryvyi Rih was also targeted by the Russian army. Five people were injured, including a ten-year-old child. Several residential buildings were hit by the gunfire. Since the Russian invasion in February 2022, Volodymyr Zelensky’s hometown has been targeted more than once by Russian forces. On August 26, a Russian missile fell on the city, killing at least four people and injuring five.

“Putin’s constant attempts to break the will of a free people”

This new series of attacks comes the day after the one that occurred in Poltava, in the center of the country. A particularly deadly attack: at least 51 people were killed and 271 others injured. On Tuesday early evening, the Ukrainian president specified that the search for survivors was still underway in the rubble. Rescue workers specified yesterday evening that up to 18 people could be found under the rubble.

In the wake of this, US President Joe Biden condemned on Tuesday “in the strongest terms” the strike “deplorable” from Russia to the city. “This attack is a tragic reminder of Putin’s constant and outrageous attempts to break the will of a free people.”he said in a White House statement, assuring that the United States would continue to support Ukrainians, “including by providing them with the air defence systems and capabilities they need to protect their country”.
