One dead and two on the run after barber shop robbery

A “hooded” man was shot dead in the street, and two people are still on the run, island authorities say.

The events took place on Tuesday, September 3 around noon. A hooded man was shot dead in circumstances that are still unclear during the robbery of a barber shop in Pointe-à-Pitre, Guadeloupe, the public prosecutor said.

The identities of the person who fired the fatal shots and the victim are not known at this stage, according to the prosecution. The crime could be linked to a settling of scores, we learned from concordant sources.

Flagrance investigation opened

In the middle of the day, several individuals held up a barber shop located on a busy street in Pointe-à-Pitre, explained prosecutor Caroline Calbo. A “hooded” man was shot dead in the street, and two people are still on the run.

An investigation into the crime has been opened for “voluntary homicide and armed robbery”, and an autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday morning, the prosecution said.

Near the scene of the tragedy, a school, where students were returning to school, was evacuated and closed by the mayor of Pointe-à-Pitre, Harry Durimel. The investigation was entrusted to the criminal brigade of the territorial service of the judicial police.

“This is the 23rd homicide since the beginning of the year, 17 of which were by firearm,” added Caroline Calbo, stressing that “this homicide is not the only incident of the day.” Earlier on Tuesday morning, gunfire in another town left one victim, currently “between life and death.”
