Emmanuel Macron hesitates. He “chews”as he himself says, the hypotheses available to him. The President of the Republic tests one option, pretends to abandon another, returns to square one… Tuesday, September 3, the day after the start of the school year and nearly sixty days after the second round of the legislative elections, the Head of State had still not made his choice on the name of the future Prime Minister, assuming to leave the country in the hands of a government that resigned since July 16.

The candidates for Matignon pass, one by one, the test of “the funnel”as they say inelegantly at the Elysée. And if, for a few hours, Thierry Beaudet, president of the Economic and Social Council (CESE) could believe in his promotion Rue de Varenne, the man, close to the reformist union CFDT, corresponding to a so-called “technical” profile, was no longer mentioned by the palace on Tuesday evening. “As soon as he brandished his name, it was torn into pieces by the left and the right.”observes Macronist senator François Patriat. Conclusion: “The only solution [pour Matignon] is political »now claims a close friend of the head of state.

According to the Elysée, the final is between Xavier Bertrand, the president of Hauts-de-France, member of the Republicans (LR) and Bernard Cazeneuve, former member of the Socialist Party (PS) and former prime minister of François Hollande. Both were received by Emmanuel Macron on Monday, during a day of intense consultations where the President of the Republic, as in serious times, met his predecessors from the left, François Hollande, and from the right, Nicolas Sarkozy. But nothing has been decided.

On Tuesday, the Head of State continued his interviews behind the scenes, by telephone, sounding out the right-wing parliamentarians – LR senator Bruno Retailleau, the leader of the Republican right-wing deputies, Laurent Wauquiez, the LR president of the Senate, Gérard Larcher, then from the left – Boris Vallaud, the leader of the PS deputies, and Olivier Faure, the secretary general of the PS. Before concluding the day with a phone call refused by the “insoumis” Manuel Bompard and Mathilde Panot, another accepted by the ecologists Marine Tondelier and Cyrielle Chatelain. To finish with a final exchange with the leader of the far-right deputies, Marine Le Pen.

“The president favors stability over speed”

Recalling his role as guarantor of the institutions, Emmanuel Macron sought to know, during his discussions, whether the future prime minister would be overthrown, upon his appointment, by a motion of censure adopted by a majority of the 577 deputies. “The president favors stability over speed”argues the entourage of the current Prime Minister, Gabriel Attal, to excuse the slowness of the presidential decision. “The king is having fun”castigates political scientist Vincent Martigny, calling Emmanuel Macron a “master of the broken clocks”.
