Teenager commits suicide by jumping from shopping mall, killing passerby in fall

A 17-year-old woman jumped from a shopping mall in Yokohama, Japan on Saturday, August 31. A passerby was killed in her fall.

A tragedy that left two dead. A young woman ended her life, accidentally killing another person in the process, in the city of Yokohama, Japan, reports the BBC on Monday, September 2.

The 17-year-old girl jumped from the top of a shopping centre on Saturday 31 August around 6pm. As she fell, she hit a 32-year-old woman who was enjoying an outing with friends.

Both women were taken to hospital, seriously injured. The high school student was pronounced dead just an hour after her arrival. The passerby also died within hours.

An investigation opened

According to Japanese media outlet NHK, the teenager was from the city of Kimitsu, located south of Tokyo, and the passerby was an office worker who worked in Yokohama.

The shopping centre was very busy on this Saturday afternoon at the time of the tragedy. An investigation has been opened by the police, investigations are underway to try to better understand the circumstances of this tragedy.

In 2020, a similar accident occurred. A 17-year-old boy jumped from the roof of a shopping mall in Osaka, killing a 19-year-old woman. The young man was charged with manslaughter posthumously, before the charges were eventually dropped.

In 2023, 523 teenagers committed suicide in Japan. Suicide is the leading cause of death for this age group in the country.
