Trump stuck in his contradictions on reproductive rights

The program announced a “fireside chat” with Donald Trump. There was no fire on Friday, August 30, in a grand hotel in Washington, despite the enthusiasm of the audience, won over to the Republican candidate in the American presidential election of November 5. It was composed of delegates from the conservative organization Moms for Liberty, which claims to defend parental rights against their supposed indoctrination by public schools.

During this exchange led by one of the founders of the organization, Tiffany Justice, redoubling her attention to him, Donald Trump, visibly tired, multiplied the outrages. Kamala Harris? “A deficient person” et “a complete Marxist”The thirteen American soldiers killed in an attack in Kabul during the withdrawal from Afghanistan? “These people were killed by Joe Biden.” Migrants? “They are poisoning our country.”

Diversions. Donald Trump revisited his career with emphasis, repeated his classic anecdotes, did a long imitation of billionaire Elon Musk. On the other hand, he did not talk about what mattered most to Moms for Liberty: family values, God, “wokeness,” teachers who would destroy their children. He barely mentioned the transgender issue – the organization’s great obsession. “The transgender thing is amazinghe said. Your kid goes to school and comes home a few days later with surgery. The school decides what happens to your child.” Claiming that Republicans form “the party of common sense”Mr. Trump said “fully for parental rights”. But he forgot to mention his main proposal, the abolition of the education department.

Ambition nataliste

The former president has never been comfortable with these issues, beyond his barroom mockery of women’s sports disfigured by the inclusion of men. He prefers to talk about the issue of migration, crime or inflation. During the primaries, he had abandoned to Ron DeSantis, the governor of Florida, the primacy of the cultural war against “wokism”. But today, in this electric presidential campaign, two visions of the family are colliding, in a way that is unfavorable for Donald Trump, who has been struggling in recent days.

The first, consensual, is that of the Democratic candidate, Kamala Harris, and her running mate, Tim Walz, the governor of Minnesota. It is based on the right to difference and freedom, respect for privacy, without the local or federal government claiming to govern women’s bodies. The second vision is less supported by Donald Trump than by his vice-presidential candidate, J. D. Vance. It is a sepia print of the American family, consisting of advocating a traditional nucleus between a man and a woman, whose purpose – the only possible fulfillment – requires having children.
