New bus crash in South Africa, at least five dead after a deadly week

South Africa has one of the most developed road networks on the continent but also one of the worst road safety records, due in part to the poor condition of vehicles and reckless driving by motorists.

A bus from Zimbabwe overturned in Limpopo province in northeastern South Africa, killing at least five people, local authorities said Sunday, September 1, after a deadly week that left dozens dead on the road.

The province’s transportation ministry “is saddened to announce a second deadly bus accident in less than five days,” according to a statement.

Many passengers injured

Four men and a woman died when the vehicle overturned at around 5:30 p.m. local time on Sunday. “Fatigue may have been a cause of the accident,” authorities said.

“Many passengers were injured to varying degrees and were hospitalized,” the ministry added.

Earlier this week, another bus from Zimbabwe overturned in Limpopo province, killing 10 people and injuring 35. And on Saturday, at least 11 people were killed in a head-on collision in KwaZulu-Natal province in eastern South Africa.

Also on Saturday in the same province, at least six supporters of the opposition party uMkhonto Wesizwe died when the driver of their minibus lost control.

The Limpopo Department of Transport has “called on bus companies to ensure their drivers are ‘fit for duty'”.
