Létang “mad as hell” against VAR and “truncated championship”, Genesio cries injustice after Lille goal disallowed

Having fallen on their home turf against PSG (3-1) on Sunday evening, Lille struggled to contain their anger at the offside whistle that deprived Tiago Santos of the equaliser at 2-2 at the end of the match. Like Bruno Genesio, they believe that VAR is to blame for this contentious situation, while its president Olivier Létang is much angrier.

Lille had a hard time digesting it. Beaten 3-1 on their home turf by Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday evening during the clash of the 3rd day of Ligue 1, LOSC feels wronged. The reason was the goal of an equalizer at 2-2 at the end of the match, taken away after the fact from Tiago Santos on an extremely borderline offside situation.

>> Relive the success of the Parisians in Lille

“The second Lille goal is valid, if we put in a VAR that doesn’t do its job, it’s useless. On the bus, what were the referees doing, were they watching something else, a film?”, Bruno Genesio joked after the match.

“We must avoid the slightest error and have video assistance that is up to par”

Because “if the second goal is awarded, I would have liked to see what happened next, because we felt Paris was on the verge of breaking down,” continued the Dogues coach. However, the Portuguese full-back seems to be in an illegal position in this situation, even if it comes down to nothing. According to our information, Lille believes that a bad indicator was presented to the referee of the match by the VAR.

“The championship is already truncated”

The president of Losc Olivier Létang, in the mixed zone, was even more blunt: “At the time I didn’t know it but for me it was the highlight of the match. Obviously we’re not going too far but the championship is already truncated. We put millions of euros on the table to have the video, to be sure to make the right decisions… everyone looked after the fact, I even went to see Mr. Bastien who had nothing to do with it, he confirmed to me that the fact that Thomas Meunier touched the ball put Tiago Santos back into play. It was the big frustration of the evening, to say the least because we were at 2-2 at that point in the match, there were eight minutes left, we were pushing so we didn’t know what could have happened. I’m very angry, I’m very upset about it. We put millions of euros on the table and we’ll end up saying that PSG won when we were at 2-2 with eight minutes to go.”

“I don’t know if it’s a technology problem. There are people who are responsible for that. There is always the debate about whether we continue or not but you realize that we have PSG who have nine points, who should have seven or less if we scored a third goal. In the end we are all frustrated. When afterwards we see clearly, cleanly and precisely that there is no offside… yes I am furious,” concludes the manager.
