Young director from French-speaking Switzerland, Sarah Imsand loves her job

Swiss cinema has a bright future ahead of it. FUTURA! Flight. 2, a collection of ten 15-minute documentary short films, will have its world premiere on Saturday January 25, 2025, at 8 p.m., at the Canva Cinema, during the 60th edition of the Solothurn Days festival.

Among the ten young Swiss directors from varied backgrounds, Sarah Imsand will present “Bodybuilding”. His work paints the portrait of Vanessa Pereira, a young Lausanne resident, a top athlete, who trains hard to win a bodybuilding competition in Stockholm. “I wanted to have a woman as the main character in my short film and Vanessa is someone who is very strong, unusual,” confides the Vaudoise with an Ethiopian father. Through her heroine, the 32-year-old director also wants to “break the stereotypes” that we may have about femininity: “Vanessa is a very muscular athlete who practices a rather masculine sport, but she is also a beautician, which is a rather feminine and delicate profession. I found this contrast very interesting.” What message does the filmmaker want to convey? “Ask yourself what it is to be a woman. What defines femininity? We also need to look beyond the prejudices about women who do bodybuilding.”

With a Bachelor’s degree in cinema, Sarah loves “telling people’s stories” behind her camera. “I find that through a film, we touch directly with the emotions,” she says. As for her professional future, she views it calmly. “It’s a complicated job to make a living in Switzerland, but there are a lot of things that are being put in place. It really depends on the desire we have to come together and collaborate among young directors,” explains the thirty-year-old. FUTURA! also allowed her to meet professionals with more experience than her. “It’s great to be able to make those connections. I am quite optimistic for the future. There are so many stories to tell in Switzerland, rejoices Sarah. And for me, this job is truly a passion. I couldn’t see myself doing anything else.”
