François Legault calls on Quebecers to show solidarity in the coming months to face Donald Trump’s threats of customs tariffs.
In a press briefing following the Coalition Avenir Québec caucus on Wednesday, the Prime Minister indicated that the province’s economy could change in the coming years depending on what the American president announces in the coming weeks. .
“It’s time to stick together,” he said. Things will be brewing in the coming months and years. Quebec’s economy will not be the same in five years as the one we know today. There are certain products that we will probably no longer export to the United States.
“In exchange, there absolutely must be more products consumed by Quebecers that are produced by Quebecers,” he adds. It’s time to show solidarity and stick together.”
He invites businesses in the province to replace their American products with products from the province.
“If the products we import from the United States cost more, that represents an opportunity to replace some of these products. [par des produits Québécois]he mentions. I hope that this mobilizes Quebecers more than ever to buy Quebecois.”
-“We are asking all Quebec companies, if you are capable of replacing certain American products, to look into doing so with our help,” adds Mr. Legault.
The Prime Minister also mentioned the idea of implementing a mode of operation similar to the “Buy American Act” for calls for tenders in Quebec if the United States moves forward with its customs tariffs.
“What we have always asked is that Canada be included in the 70% of “America” content, he says. There, we are going in the opposite direction, Mr. Trump is threatening us with tariffs, so we can ask ourselves the question, if our calls for tenders should be restricted to the United States, if they go from there ‘before with significant tariffs on our products.’
