Near Stanstead: US border agent shot and killed in Vermont

A U.S. border patrol officer was killed in a shooting in Coventry, Vermont, near the Canadian border, Monday afternoon.

The event occurred on Interstate 91, according to the Albany FBI. The highway travels all the way to the border, where the town of Stanstead is on the other side.

“A US border patrol officer was killed along with another person. Another person was injured and is in custody,” the FBI said in a statement.

The person killed alongside the agent would be of German nationality, according to the Washington Post. The FBI confirmed this information, adding that she held a visa to stay in the United States. The other suspect in custody is believed to be a US citizen.

The Acting Secretary of Homeland Security, Benjamine Huffman, confirmed in a press release that the death occurred “in the line of duty” and that the patrol boat was assigned to the Swanton sector, Vermont.

“We are heartbroken for our partners and join in their grief as they mourn the loss of their colleague, who also served his country as a United States Air Force veteran,” we indicated in a press release on Tuesday evening.

The FBI and Vermont State Police have launched an investigation into the event.

In shock

In Newport, residents are in shock.

“It’s a scary time,” said one American.

“It’s horrible, [ces agents] are just doing their job,” one man said.

It is known that another occupant of the suspect vehicle has been arrested. At this time, it is unclear why the individuals were intercepted and whether or not they had just crossed the border illegally.

Southbound Interstate 91 was closed overnight and throughout the morning Tuesday as the FBI investigation continued. Around 12:30 p.m., the agents cleared the access roads, almost 24 hours after the events.
