Google Summer of Code 2025 is launched: what you need to know

2005 – 2025: Google Summer of Code celebrates its 20th anniversary this year… we have been following it since its beginnings! The GSoC program returns and maintains the same objective: supporting the next generation of free software by allowing hundreds of participants each year to develop their open source skills. With this 2025 edition, Google hopes to surpass the record mobilization of 2024 (1,127 projects completed, 195 participating organizations).

AOver the past 20 years, more than 21,000 new contributors have joined open source communities through GSoC, under the supervision of 20,000+ mentors from 1,000 diverse projects. What’s new this year? Let’s follow the official announcements.

What is Google Summer of Code?

The GSoC is a program designed to encourage developers, students or not, to get involved in open source projects. Under the supervision of experienced organizations and mentors, participants work for three months (or more) on real-world code, receive compensation, and gain valuable community collaboration experience. Every year, GSoC attracts contributors from around the world eager to learn, improve and bring free software projects to life.

Organizations, open source projects: how to participate

Open source organizations interested in hosting GSoC participants are invited to apply via the official GSoC website.

  • Application period : of January 27 to February 11, 2025
  • The selected projects must propose ideas for realistic and educational tasks (development, improvement of documentation, refactoring, etc.), while setting up a team of mentors.
  • Google highlights the importance of welcoming more domains this year Security et Machine Learning.

The program is aimed at amateur developers, students or young professionals who wish to discover open source or progress with the help of mentors.
