TikTok temporarily unavailable after ban in effect

According to our Anadolu Agency source, TikTok recently announced to American users that the video sharing application is currently not accessible in the territory. This unavailability results from a new law banning TikTok in the United States.

The application informed its users with a clear message: “Sorry, TikTok is not available at the moment. A law banning TikTok has, in fact, been enacted in the United States. Unfortunately, this means you can’t use TikTok at the moment. » Despite this, users still have the option to log in to download their personal data.

On the application, it also states: “We are fortunate that President Trump has indicated that he will work with us on a solution to restore TikTok as soon as he takes office. Stay tuned! » However, it should be noted that the application is no longer available on the App Store and Google Play Store.

Hours before the outage, TikTok announced that its services would be “temporarily unavailable.” The message to users stated: “We regret that a US law banning TikTok takes effect on January 19 and requires us to make our services temporarily unavailable. »

The United States Supreme Court upheld this ban, unless ByteDance, the Chinese parent company of TikTok, sells its shares of the application. The Court ruled that this ultimatum, proposed to the Chinese giant, did not constitute a violation of the First Amendment.

In response, the White House argued that TikTok should be kept in the United States, provided there is satisfactory American ownership, to address security concerns. President-elect Donald Trump, who has expressed interest in TikTok, will take office at the White House on Monday. This will take place a day after the ultimatum that ByteDance must respect regarding the disengagement.

Donald Trump also asked the Supreme Court to postpone its decision to try to negotiate. Finally, it was reported that Shou Zi Chew, the CEO of TikTok, may attend Donald Trump’s inauguration. Last April, a bipartisan law, sanctioned by Joe Biden, provided a deadline of 270 days for the disengagement of ByteDance, failing which a ban would apply.
