In remote areas of Senegal, there is often a critical shortage of teachers. This is particularly the case in Matam. But those mainly concerned are trying to find solutions to remedy this. It is in this sense that the Autonomous Union for the Development of Education and Training (SADEF) intervenes. Its secretary general, Mbaye Sarr, set out an alternative. According to him, the State must reward teachers who agree to go to Matam and surrounding areas.
« To compensate for the shortage of teachers in Matam and other regions, we propose to the government of Senegal to allocate a special remoteness allowance for teachers who agree to serve in remote localities such as Matam, Sédhiou, Tambacounda, Kolda, Kédougou and Ziguinchor “, he said this Saturday, January 18. It was as part of his union’s tour in Matam.
At Matam, the solution used is the double-stream class format. That is to say that the class is divided into two groups which come alternately. But according to Mbaye Sarr, this only harms the students. “ This method does not promote quality teaching. From this point of view, we draw the attention of the authorities so that bold measures are taken to stem this phenomenon. ».
The trade unionist also mentioned the resources of schools in this area of Senegal. “ We also noticed that many schools are deprived of budgets. Since 2017, schools can no longer operate without a budget. Those that were initially allocated to schools were suspended for reasons unknown to us ».
