This is an opinion much more widespread than among Canadians aged 35 to 55 (33%) and which is shared by less than one in five Canadians aged over 55 (17%), found the firm Ipsos in a survey conducted from January 9 to 13 with 1,000 respondents.

On average, nearly a third (30%) of Canadians would be tempted by this change.

If we exclude the question of citizenship and currency, a large majority of Canadians of all ages reject annexation to the United States, both the youngest (77%) and the oldest (87%). .

Furthermore, young people seem to take Donald Trump’s threats much more seriously than their older fellow citizens: 65% of them say that his allusions to the 51e State makes them believe that the independence of Canada is “seriously in danger”.

For those aged 55 and over, the figure drops to 35%, while for those aged 35 to 55, it is 47%.

Those aged 18 to 34 are more fatalistic: almost a third (31%) think that “it is only a matter of time” before the United States and Canada converge into one country.

As with the previous questions, the gradation of opinion follows that of age: a tiny minority (11%) of those over 55 think that the scenario is plausible compared to 21% for those aged 35 to 55.

In the same vein, 35% of young Canadians believe that the separation of Quebec and/or Alberta will take place in the next 10 years, compared to 27% of those aged 35 to 55 and those aged 55 and over.

Since his victory in the American elections in November, Donald Trump has increased his mockery of Canada. On his social networks, he talks about Canada as 51e American state and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as a “governor”.

At a recent press conference, he declared that he would use “economic force” to bend Canada to his will.

Justin Trudeau repeated on CNN and MSNBC that Canada “will never become” an American state.
