Spaniard captured in southern Algeria by the Islamic State in the Great Sahara terrorist group, led by former Polisario officials

According to the daily “El País”, he is a sixty-year-old captured in the south of Algeria by the Islamic State group in the Great Sahara led until 2021 by Adnane Abou Walid al-Sahraoui, a former responsible for the Polisario.

A Spanish citizen was kidnapped in North Africa in circumstances that are still unclear, Madrid announced on Thursday evening, January 16, specifying that they were working “actively” to clarify the facts and help him. “Various reliable sources confirm that a Spanish citizen is currently being held against his will in North Africa”said the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a press release. “The government is actively working to clarify all aspects of the matter and achieve its resolution”adds the text, without giving more details on the profile of the person in question or the circumstances of his disappearance.

The ministry thus partially confirmed information given a few hours earlier by Spanish media. According to the daily The Country, he is a Spanish citizen in his sixties, captured in southern Algeria by the Islamic State in the Great Sahara (EIGS) group led by former members of the Polisario, and then transferred to Mali, a neighboring country plagued by jihadist violence since 2012. In July of that year, two Spanish humanitarian workers and an Italian woman were released after being kidnapped ten months earlier in the south of Algeria by an Islamist group.
