the reluctant approval of the Israeli government

The answer came in the night, releasing hopes. At 4:49 a.m., Friday, January 17, the Israeli Prime Minister's office confirmed what the press had announced a few hours earlier: “Benyamin Netanyahu was informed by the negotiating team that agreements have been reached for the release of the hostages. » Then early in the afternoon, the Israeli security cabinet gave its approval to the ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. The entire Israeli government was to meet immediately and in turn approve this three-phase plan, supposed to put an end to fifteen months of war, which had been announced two days earlier by American President Joe Biden. It was the recriminations and one-upmanship of far-right ministers which, in all likelihood, delayed the procedure, as well as Mr. Netanyahu's last-minute reservations.

Donald Trump, the president-elect, announced the agreement on Wednesday and intended to promote it during his inauguration on Monday. He was already anticipating the next phase, writing on his Truth Social network: “We will continue to promote PEACE THROUGH FORCE across the region, as we build on the momentum of this ceasefire to further expand the historic Abraham Accords”a reference to the 2020 agreements that normalized Israel's relations with the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Morocco.
