HCP survey: Moroccan morale improves slightly, but their confidence in education collapses

The High Commission for Planning (HCP) has published the results of its economic survey conducted among households for the fourth quarter of 2024. These data show a slight improvement in the Household Confidence Index (MCI) compared to previous quarters. .

The ICM up slightly

In the fourth quarter of 2024, the ICM reached 46.5 points, up slightly from 46.2 points recorded in the previous quarter and 44.3 points from the same quarter of the previous year.

The components of the ICM reflect household perceptions on several key aspects. Concerning the standard of living, 81.0% of households declared a deterioration over the last 12 months, while 14.2% estimated that it remained stable, and only 4.8% noted an improvement. The balance of opinion on this subject remained negative at -76.2 points, however recording a slight improvement compared to -75.8 points of the previous quarter.

For the outlook for living standards over the next 12 months, 53.8% of households expect a deterioration, 38.5% expect stability, and 7.7% expect an improvement. This places the balance of opinion at -46.1 points, marking a recovery compared to the previous quarter.

Concerning unemployment, 82.7% of households anticipate an increase, compared to only 5.5% who envisage a decrease. The balance of opinion remains negative at -77.2 points.

Regarding the opportunity to purchase durable goods, 80.0% of households consider the time inappropriate, while 8.1% consider it favorable. The corresponding balance of opinion is -71.9 points, a slight deterioration compared to the previous quarter.

Financially, 56.5% of households say that their income covers their expenses, 41.2% say they resort to debt or their savings, and only 2.3% manage to save. The balance of opinion relating to this component remained negative at -38.9 points, although a moderate improvement was observed.

For their future financial situation, 15.2% of households expect an improvement, while 31.5% anticipate a deterioration. The balance of opinion on this point stands at -16.3 points, signaling an improvement compared to the previous quarter.

The survey also reveals that only 11.1% of households think they will be able to save over the next 12 months, compared to 88.9% who consider this unlikely. The balance of opinion for this indicator remained negative at -77.8 points.

On the question of food prices, 97.5% of households have noted an increase over the last 12 months, and 83.3% expect this increase to continue in the short term. The balances of opinion relating to the past and future evolution of food prices remain respectively at -97.2 points and -81.8 points.

In 2024, the annual survey made it possible to assess households’ perceptions of certain public services and rights. The quality of administrative services was judged to be improving by 55.8% of households, with a balance of opinion of 38.4 points, higher than that of 2023.

In terms of environmental protection, 47.7% of households noted an improvement, but the balance of opinion decreased, falling to 28.8 points compared to 32.8 points in 2023. The perception of environmental rights Men also recorded a decline, with 35.8% of households estimating an improvement compared to 19.6% noting a deterioration, placing the balance of opinion at 16.2 points, down compared to the previous year.

Education and health services, for their part, were widely perceived as deteriorating. For education, 57.9% of households reported a deterioration compared to only 18.1% noting an improvement. The balance of opinion on this aspect plunged to -39.8 points, compared to -16.9 points in 2023. For health, the balance of opinion also fell from -44.0 points in 2023 to -48, 8 points in 2024, with 61.2% of households noting a deterioration.
