The French government has taken the decision to freeze the assets of El Yess Zareli, also known under the pseudonym Elias d’Imzalene, a pro-Palestinian activist. This measure was made official in a decree published this Thursday in the Official Journal of the French Republic, consulted by our colleagues from Anadolu.
This decree, signed by the Ministers of the Interior and the Economy on January 13, specifies that “the funds and economic resources which belong to [Elias d’Imzalène] are owned, held or controlled [par lui] are subject to an asset freeze measure for a period of six months. During this period, “the direct or indirect provision, or use of funds or economic resources for the benefit of this person” is strictly prohibited, according to the text. Elias d’Imzalene, who is also the founder of the media “Islam et info”, has two months to appeal this decision.
This freezing of assets comes shortly after the Paris criminal court sentenced him to five months in prison, suspended, in December, for “public incitement to hatred”. On September 8, 2024, during a pro-Palestinian rally in Paris, Elias d’Imzalene gave a speech inciting people to “lead the intifada in Paris, in [les] suburbs, in [les] neighborhoods”, as reported by Le Monde.
More broadly, it should be noted that many Internet users, activists and media figures in France are currently being prosecuted for their positions concerning the ongoing conflict in the Gaza Strip, considered to incite violence. The information was relayed by our colleagues from Anadolu, highlighting the tensions around this subject.
