Faced with drug trafficking in their neighborhood, Brussels residents adopt a radical solution: “We can no longer tolerate an unlivable neighborhood”

More than 50,000 euros in cash, 34 kg of cannabis: the police dismantle a network of drug traffickers active throughout Brussels

“They are almost never arrested. They just laugh at the police”

We can no longer tolerate living in an unlivable neighborhood. Our cars and mailboxes are destroyed to hide drugs and laughing gas. Not to mention the speed of the scooters (…) and the dirt they leave here. The sellers are often undocumented young people, armed with a knife. We see that they are hiding drugs in their underwear, but the police don’t search there. They are almost never arrested. They just make fun of the police“, confides a resident on condition of anonymity.

Arizona: N-VA proposes merging police zones in Brussels and closing drug consumption rooms

“The police can’t do anything”

It is precisely these tricks that traffickers play on. The sponsors send minors, sometimes illegal, into the field to limit police action. “We can’t just ask minors to pull down their underwear and these drug dealers know it. If at the time of a search no drugs or weapons are found elsewhere and the person has hidden them in certain intimate places, there is no way to recover them“, explains Sarah Frederickx, spokesperson for the Brussels-South police zone, to our colleagues. Furthermore, minors have a special protection status, even in the event of arrest.”as soon as the parents arrive at the police station, the minor will be released“, she continues. In the case where the individual does not have papers, the task becomes even more complicated. “These are generally people who have an order to leave the territory. (…) There is then another problem: the asylum centers are full. So the police can’t do anything.

The spokesperson concludes by reminding that this type of intervention is solely the responsibility of the police and advises against the behavior of these residents, which she describes as “dangerous”.
