Viola Amherd, the end of a casting error

The election of Viola Amherd to the Federal Council following Doris Leuthard was the apotheosis of her political career. In 2019, she had the title and honor of being the first woman to head the Swiss army. But truth be told, she would have been fine without it. She had no choice but to replace Guy Parmelin, who wanted to take over the economy. The Center did not have the means to obtain the Department of Justice and Police, which fell to Karin Keller-Sutter elected at the same time as her.

The Valaisanne made a brave face against bad luck, developing themes such as the place of women in the army, equality or violence in sport. But, after six years of intrigues, secrecy and other military camaraderie, we understand that she wants to return home in good health and enjoy life. Especially since his lifelong friend, his advisor Brigitte Hauser-Sües, had to retire at the end of last year. In these conditions, what is the point of still remaining exposed to such a position?

She spent her year in office without particular brilliance, apart from her strong support for Volodymyr Zelensky and Ursula von der Leyen. Viola Amherd, who nevertheless comes from a very conservative background in Haut-Valais, has always chosen the camp of openness to the world and particularly to our European neighbors for Switzerland. If she had been in another department, in a more stimulating environment to develop her ideas, she certainly would not have resigned so early.

During these six years, Viola Amherd, however, played the game of collegiality and responsibility, in a sometimes minimalist and somewhat dry tone, which annoyed more than one. But she was never as relaxed and at ease as this Wednesday, January 15, after announcing her resignation at 2:23 p.m. She had suddenly found joy of life and color. Happy retirement!
