The military truce, associated with the release of some of the hostages held for fifteen months in the Gaza Strip, is due to begin next Sunday.
In fifteen months, the war between Israel and Hamas has occupied a large part of the French political debate. To the point of driving a wedge on the left, whose groups have regularly displayed their divisions on the situation in the Middle East. The ceasefire agreement validated this Wednesday between the Hebrew State and the terrorist organization, – including a 42-day truce starting on Sunday and the release of a third (33) of the Israeli hostages in exchange for Palestinian prisoners – could this then be a turning point? And ease the tensions that have reigned in France since the massacres of October 7 and the Israeli responses that followed?
As soon as the news was announced, Emmanuel Macron welcomed the end of a “unjustifiable ordeal”factor of “huge relief for Gazans” and“hope for the hostages and their families”. The opportunity for the President of the Republic to have a “thought” for Ofer Kalderon and Ohad Yahalomi, the two Franco-Israeli hostages held since the fall of 2023 in the Palestinian enclave. Now, the head of state urges «respect» of the agreement. “A political solution must come”he added on the social network “step of hope in a devastated region”. Before discussing the fate of “Israeli hostages, their relatives and Gazan civilians”.
On the right, Valérie Pécresse described the agreement as “tremendous hope”. thinking “to our two compatriots held by Hamas, to the Gazan civilians victims of the war, as well as to the Lebanese people”the boss of the Ile-de-France region considered that “everything must be done to ensure that this truce allows for a lasting return to peace and guaranteed security for everyone in the region.”
“The rulers allowed the massacre to take place”
On the left, finally, we also welcome the end – at least temporary – of the conflicts in the Middle East. Like Jean-Luc Mélenchon who calls for “the lives of survivors (power) be spared from now on”. “May the hostages and prisoners return to life and the scars of their physical and moral wounds soften”developed the rebellious leader. Who wants to both allow “living (of) mourn their dead without fear” and that “the future will not forget the guilt and shame of our leaders who let it happen, looked the other way and encouraged the massacre.”
Among the Socialists, the first secretary Olivier Faure has so far not reacted. Few have done it like MEP Chloé Ridel, who shared her “thought” for the “Israeli hostages, their families, and the tens of thousands of Palestinian civilians killed and those who survive in a destroyed world.” “Let the fire cease permanently and let justice come to pass, for Hamas as for Netanyahu (Israeli Prime Minister, Editor’s note)», pleaded the party spokesperson with the rose. As for the communists, Fabien Roussel expressed his “relief for Gaza, for the Palestinian and Israeli people and for all of Humanity.” For the national secretary of the PCF, “the only condition for lasting peace” boils down to “two peoples, two states.” “The ceasefire and the release of the hostages are a first step.”
