DRC: RDC and Vodacom Congo join forces to bridge the digital divide

The telecommunications networks Vodacom Congo and RDC announced on January 14 the establishment of a joint venture intended to strengthen network coverage in rural areas of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This partnership between the two telecommunications networks aims to provide mobile network access to 19 million people in isolated regions of the country.

(Cio mag) – This is an unprecedented partnership between two telecommunications leaders operating in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Through this collaboration, Vodacom Congo and Orange RDC plan to implement sustainable energy solutions. The creation of this joint venture provides “the installation of 2000 mobile base stations powered by solar energy”, we read in the joint press release from these networks. These infrastructures, compatible with 2G and 4G technologies, will be deployed gradually over a period of six years. The first phase of the project “will involve the construction of 1000 stations, with the possibility of adding another 1000 sites” throughout the country, the document specifies.

Accelerate digitalization

The first station will be operational during this year, in accordance with the objectives of the National Digital Plan 2025 launched in 2019. This project aims to transform the national economy by accelerating digitalization and promoting inclusive economic growth. “This partnership with Orange, which is an extension of our commitment to a better future, marks a key step in our commitment to connecting underserved regions of the DRC”declared Shameel Joosub, CEO of the Vodacom Congo group.

Supporting GDP growth

This initiative will allow users to benefit from improved network coverage, optimized voice and data services, as well as expanded access to mobile payment solutions, crucial tools in an increasingly digitalized economy. “ Thanks to this collaboration with Vodacom, we are showing that it is possible to combine economic performance and positive social impact, while reducing our environmental footprint”declared Jérôme Hénique, Managing Director of Orange Africa and Middle East.

Furthermore, Vodacom Congo and Orange RDC will jointly use the infrastructure provided by the joint venture as main tenants, over a period of 20 years. This program will also stimulate the creation of local jobs and support the growth of the national gross domestic product (GDP) by extending access to telecommunications in isolated regions.
