Many countries aren't worried about Trump's return…and not the ones you might have expected

The return of Donald Trump to the White House is rather seen as a “good thing” in the world. But much less in Western countries, allies of the United States. These are the rather surprising conclusions of a poll carried out by the European Council on International Relations and published on Wednesday.

From India to China to Turkey to Brazil, a majority of respondents believe the return of Trump, who takes office on Monday, will be positive for world peace, their countries and American citizens. This trend is particularly marked in India, where 82% of respondents have this opinion. “Trump's pacifying speech regarding Ukraine and the Middle East resonated around the world,” say the authors of this study, carried out in collaboration with the University of Oxford in Great Britain.

Strong mistrust in the United Kingdom

On the other hand, this feeling is not shared by some of Washington's closest allies: the United Kingdom, the European Union, South Korea. In Western Europe (taking into account the average result in the eleven European Union countries surveyed), only 22% of citizens think that the return of Trump will be a “good thing” for their country, 29% believe that it will be beneficial for world peace.

And it is even among the historic ally of the United States that the distrust of the future American president is the strongest. 50% of people surveyed in the United Kingdom have a negative opinion of it.

In Ukraine, at war with Russia, the majority of respondents are cautious. 26% think that the American billionaire’s return to business will be a “good thing” for their country. But above all, 55% of them did not comment even though Trump explained that he could resolve the conflict in twenty-four hours.
