For the first time since the team moved, Utah HC hosted the Canadians on Tuesday. With nine victories in its last 12 games, Montreal was trying to continue its good momentum.
Here is the Canadian’s lineup:
And here is Utah’s lineup:
Both teams put on an offensive show from the start of the match.
Michael Pezzetta and Mike Matheson were both chased in the opening minutes of the game, giving Utah a five-on-three power play. Josh Doan took advantage of the opportunity to open the scoring after less than three minutes of play.
Matheson, however, managed to redeem himself about a minute later. The defenseman collected the puck before completely mocking both Utah defenders with his speed. He completed the maneuver with a shot between the legs of Karel Vejmelka to score the first goal for CH.
Lane Hutson collected his 30th assist of the season on the goal, making him the sixth-fastest defenseman to reach 30 assists in his rookie season.
He only needed 43 games, which is better than Cale Makar and Quinn Hughes!
Except that Utah took control of this match quite quickly. At the very end of the first period, Nick Bjugstad’s shot found its way behind Samuel Montembeault.
After 20 minutes of play, the Canadians trailed 2 to 1.
The Canadian took control in the second period. After letting Utah shoot 14 shots at Montembeault in the first period, Montreal limited their opponents to just six shots in the second.
For their part, the Habs fired 12 shots on the opposing net and managed to score twice.
Nick Suzuki came close to tying the game in the second period. Vejmelka was saved by his defense.
Patrik Laine tied the game by scoring his 10th goal of the season, which was also his first goal in a tie with the Canadiens.
Lane Hutson then returned to the charge by serving a clever pass to Kirby Dach, who also put on a show by scoring a beautiful goal.
After two periods, the Canadian was now ahead by a score of 3 to 2.
We once again had a few goals in the third period. There was a certain relaxation from the Canadian at the start of the period and Utah took advantage of it.
Logan Cooley was treated to an empty net to score.
Except that the Canadians were far from having said their last word.
Lane Hutson (yes, him again) broke away and fired a shot that found its way into the opposing goal. Upon restart, however, we noticed that Cole Caufield had touched the puck, giving him his 24th goal of the season.
As Utah tried to get back into the game, Jake Evans managed to escape while shorthanded, but he was hooked by Mikhail Sergachev.
Evans was entitled to a penalty shot, but he was unable to beat Vejmelka.
It didn’t have too much impact on the Canadian, who continued his offensive game a few minutes later. Kirby Dach scored a second goal in the game by taking a routine shot that surprised Vejmelka.
Utah withdrew its goalkeeper at the very end of the game in order to make up for the two-goal deficit. Unfortunately not the Utah team, Montembeault and the Habs remained solid and prevented the puck from entering the net.
Montreal therefore won by a score of 5 to 3 and offers itself a 10th victory in its last 13 games.
The Canadiens will be back in action on Thursday when they visit the Stars in Dallas.
