Smart unveils new electric SUV, the largest model in its range

The brand owned by Mercedes-Benz and the Chinese giant Geely has just unveiled the third model in its electric range, the #5, which is 4.70 metres long, close to the Renault Espace, Peugeot 5008 and Tesla Model Y.

How far away the first small Smart seems with its 2.50 meters long. The brand, now owned by a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and the Chinese giant Geely, has just unveiled the third model of its 100% electric range, with a new milestone reached in its evolution.

The #5 (pronounced “hashtag 5”) that has just been unveiled is indeed 4.70 meters long. An SUV that is similar to models like the Renault Espace, the Peugeot 5008 or the Tesla Model Y. Not really what we could have imagined a few years ago as a future model for the former micro-city car specialist.

Smart continues to grow: after its #1 at 4.27 meters long and the SUV-coupe version of this model, the #3, at 4.40 meters.

A very “versatile”, family and adventure model

Logically, the brand presents this new model as the most versatile in its history. Which can apply to the space offered on board – with a wheelbase of 2.90 meters we can even talk about a family vehicle – but also to the possibility of driving off the beaten track. One of the two models presented indeed displays a real adventurer look, with a light bar and roof rack.

It was also an opportunity for Smart to highlight two recent partnerships concluded with brands focused on “outdoor sports”, the American bicycles Trek and a German specialist in equipment such as tents and backpacks, Heimplanet.

With a commercial launch planned only for the end of 2025, Smart is not yet giving all the details.

The trunk volume has not been announced but should be quite substantial. It should reach 1,530 liters with the seat folded down, notes Auto Plus, with a “frunk” (a trunk at the front under the hood) of 72 liters.

On the other hand, this #5 would not offer a seven-seater version, unlike its technical cousin, the Mercedes EQB. Perhaps we will have to wait for a future #7 to increase the number of passengers?

Autonomy to be confirmed

On the electric part, it should be noted that this model will be offered with a 100 kWh battery. The autonomy is given with the Chinese CLTC standard, a priori rather “generous” with 740 kilometers announced. We can count on an official autonomy of up to 600 kilometers in Europe.

We will also have to be patient to know the power of the electric motor(s), even if we can be rather optimistic given the off-road ambitions displayed.

The announced 800-volt architecture promises very fast recharge times, with 10 to 80% delivered in 15 minutes.

A very technological interior

As we saw in #1, this new Smart also relies heavily on on-board technologies.

The future #5 impresses on this point, with a 10.3-inch ultra HD meter screen and a duo of 2.5K Amoled screens, in the center and for the passenger, with a cumulative surface area of 25.6 inches.

We will also be able to count on a 25.6-inch augmented reality head-up display to find information directly on the windshield.

Smart also promises many connected functions, including “a cutting-edge generative AI voice assistant”, a major current trend.

More anecdotally, after the little fox that charmed us in #1, “a new avatar with the appearance of a lion will guide users through the commands,” notes the press release.

Another unknown is the price: the #3 currently starts at 37,000 euros (but is not eligible for the bonus) and the Mercedes EQB from 43,000 euros (bonus included).
