Departure of French troops from Chad: “Sovereignism is currently in the air”

In Chad, after 65 years of almost continuous presence, French troops must leave in two weeks at the latest, January 31, 2025. Why did Chadian President Mahamat Idriss Déby make this surprise decision on November 28? Is the civil war in neighboring Sudan one of the causes of the estrangement between Ndjamena and ? Hoinathy Remadji is a senior researcher and Lake Chad Basin and Central Africa specialist for the Institute for Security Studies. He answers questions from Christophe Boisbouvier, first speaking about the clashes which left twenty people dead on January 8 in Ndjamena.
