In the last few weeks, we understood that the Canadian and Jake Evans wanted to come to an agreement to keep the center player in Montreal for the next few years of his career.
But even if we knew that there was interest in keeping the center, nothing officially suggested that negotiations had begun between the CH and the Evans clan.
But now David Pagnotta (The Fourth Period) has affirmed that the discussions have indeed begun.
Because Evans loves Montreal, the CH loves him, he is useful and he is difficult to replace in his role, it is clear that this opens the door to negotiations before the deadline.
So, Kent Hughes and Jeff Gorton need to know what happens next.
I would be very surprised to see Evans leave at the deadline (because of the ranking, in particular)… unless he has really ridiculous demands in the eyes of the Montreal Canadiens.
But in fact, we can/should even expect a contract to be signed in the coming weeks. In any case, Renaud Lavoie would be surprised if it didn’t happen before the deadline, as he said this morning on BPM Sports.
Note that Eric Engels, in a paper published this morning on the Sportsnet website, says he expects a contract of $14 million over four years, or $3.5 million per year. It’s a logical amount.
Don’t expect to see the Canadian sign Evans above his price… and between you and me, I think Evans is open to putting (a little) water in his wine to stay in town.
