Stan Wawrinka did not make it past the first round at the Australian Open. The 39-year-old player from Vaud, ATP number 156 and who benefited from a wild card in Melbourne, was beaten in four sets by the Italian Lorenzo Sonego (29 years old/ATP 55). The latter won 6-4 5-7 7-5 7-5 and 3h12′ of play.
Winner of the Australian Open in 2014, Wawrinka rarely found the solution against Sonego. It must be said that the Italian, often offensive, had no complexes against the Swiss.
After being broken in his second service game, Wawrinka ran behind the score throughout a first set which was finally pocketed by Sonego. The Vaudois immediately reacted by making the break at the start of the second set. He was broken when he served for the set at 5-3, but he ended up winning this second set.
-In the third set, each of the players ensured their service until 5-5, a (poorly) chosen moment by “Stan the Man” to release his throw, Sonego achieving an anthological blow to the back on his first break point. Trailing 2 sets to 1, Wawrinka could have returned to 2-2 since he benefited from three consecutive set points at 5-4, 40-0 in his favor on Sonego’s service. But the Italian canceled them, before breaking Stan one last time and claiming victory in four sets.
