Youssou N’Dour, Chucho Valdés and John Scofield at Cully Jazz

Eight days in Lavaux, to enjoy spring and 34 concerts, that’s what Cully Jazz offers, from April 4 to 12. The festival, which opens the way to the musical events of the season, unveils its program this Tuesday, between big names, special projects and young artists.

At the Chapiteau, legendary Cuban pianist Chucho Valdés with his Royal Quartet opens the festivities (April 4), followed by jazz guitar master John Scofield (5), who plans to play original compositions and standards. Another legendary name, that of Youssou N’Dour accompanied by the Super Étoile de Dakar (10). Ibrahim Maalouf is expected with “Trumpets of Michelangelo” and the instrument invented by his father, the 1/4 tone trumpet (11).

Still at the Chapiteau, Stacey Kent gently takes the audience on a multilingual musical journey (6), Ben L’Oncle Soul is back with a new album, the same evening as hip-hop artist Sorvina (8), the pianist Tigran Hamasyan navigates between improvised jazz and Armenian folklore (9), while Cherise’s soulful voice and Jacob Banks’ fusion of afrobeat and R’n’B promise to be captivating (12).

Two events, among others, at Next Step: The Blackbyrds celebrate their 50th anniversary (9) and Kyoto Jazz Massive joins forces with singer Vanessa Freeman and the Parisian funk group Echoes Of A New Dawn Orchestra (11) .

Finally, at the Temple, three notable associations: Ballaké Sissoko and Piers Faccini (6), Chris Potter and Craig Taborn (8), Sylvie Courvoisier & Mary Halvorson (12).

It should be noted that several names of the next generation of French-speaking artists are on the program for the three paying venues at Cully Jazz. Like double bassist and singer Louise Knobil (4), the guitar virtuoso fingerstyle Vincent Schmidt in duo with Natan Niddam (5), singer and flugelhorn player Justine Tornay and her project J.NUNN (5), the gospel of Angelo Powers (11), the HEMU Jazz Orchestra feat. Uri Caine (9) and the BIG TUSK (11).

Tickets are on sale on cullyjazz.ch as well as at the festival office in Cully.

The program of the off festival and its famous free concerts in the cellars will be revealed on February 13.
