Mastercard chooses Ghana to strengthen its presence in West Africa

Mastercard recently opened its first office in Accra, Ghana, marking a significant step in the expansion of its operations in West Africa. This initiative aims to strengthen the country’s digital economy by offering innovative financial products and services tailored to the local market.

Mastercard’s physical presence in Ghana demonstrates its commitment to deepening relationships with local stakeholders and promoting inclusive growth in the region. By establishing itself in Accra, the company intends to accelerate the deployment of tailor-made solutions for Ghanaian stakeholders, thereby facilitating closer collaborations and having a positive impact on the country’s financial landscape.

Ghana, with a GDP per capita of USD 2,238 in 2023 and notable growth in sectors such as agriculture, mining and digital infrastructure, provides a favorable environment for Mastercard’s expansion. Folasade Femi-Lawal, Country Director and Area Head for West Africa at Mastercard, highlighted:

Beyond opening this office, Mastercard has established strategic partnerships with innovative players such as Kalabash, KaiOS, Boost and Smile ID, as well as financial institutions such as Access Bank and Fidelity Bank, to improve solutions cross-border payments. These collaborations have helped promote financial inclusion and digital transformation in Ghana, providing underserved communities with greater access to digital services and strengthening the country’s position as a technology innovation hub.
