Bart De Wever will only agree to govern federally under certain conditions: “I am not going to hide the reality… This country is doing very badly”

Bart De Wever, president of the N-VA and federal trainer, warns that he will only agree to govern if community progress, financial consolidation and a strict migration policy are implemented. Federal negotiations, although difficult, are moving slowly.

The current federal trainer and president of the N-VA Bart De Wever does not intend to “sit helpless at 16 rue de la Loi like the next captain of the Titanic”he declared on Saturday evening during his New Year’s speech to N-VA activists gathered in Mechelen. The N-VA wants to assume federal responsibility “if what is necessary is really done”he declared. “Community Progress” is one of them.

I think that now everything is on the table, so the government agreement is already there and it is a question of choosing, from the buffet, what we want to take, what we want to leave. But we’re not going to add anything, everything is there. I asked the King, with the agreement of all five, for the final extension. So, this means that, at the end of January, I will present my last report to the King, it will either be to report the formation of a government or the failure“, he reacts to our microphone.

On the occasion of the New Year, the president and leaders of the N-VA gathered on Saturday evening some 5,000 members and sympathizers of the nationalist group at the Nekkerhal in Mechelen. In his speech for the occasion, Bart De Wever spoke at length about the federal negotiations that he has been leading for around six months, but the discussions are, by his own admission, difficult.

“I am not going to hide the reality… This country is doing very badly. (…). Decisive measures are necessary to ensure our prosperity in the short and long term. I prefer to tell you honestly: the pass that we must cross is out of category”he conceded.

The N-VA president anticipated possible internal criticism. “Some of you might be thinking, why do we have to do this?” He himself admits to thinking so. “But as American President Lincoln said: ‘You cannot escape tomorrow’s responsibility by evading it today’”.

Furthermore, the president of the N-VA assured that his party will only govern at the federal level if there is progress on the community level, if public finances are “seriously sanitized” and if migration policy becomes stricter.

Three quarters of the speech delivered by Mr. De Wever on the occasion of the evening of equally festive good wishes addressed to the approximately 5,000 activists and sympathizers present was devoted to the two electoral victories of the N-VA over the past year, but also to a nominal tribute, in particular to the N-VA ministers of the Flemish government, and, in particular, to the Ghent leader of the N-VA, Anneleen Van Bossuyt.

Questioned on the sidelines of the event, Bart De Wever also promised that the tax pressure will not increase, with the Arizona government. The federal trainer stressed that he intended to strengthen the competitiveness of businesses and the purchasing power of workers.

He refused to say whether, in his eyes, the chances of success of the federal coalition in the making were now higher than the 50% mentioned a few weeks ago. But the negotiators “are more advanced” than a few weeks ago, in the sense that all the measures are already on the table, he declared. “The whole buffet is there, it’s a matter of determining the portions”he declared.

Each day is enough for its pain. On Sunday, the federal trainer and the Arizona party chairmen will meet from 2:00 p.m. and until 10:00 p.m. about the fiscal aspect of the socio-economic note.
