African nations on Saturday adopted a new strategy to advance agricultural development and food systems, a key source of livelihood for the continent’s people.

KAMPALA, Jan. 11 (Xinhua) — African nations on Saturday adopted a new strategy to advance agricultural development and food systems, a key source of livelihood for the continent’s people.

The 10-year strategy and action plan to implement the Comprehensive African Agricultural Development Program (CAADP), as well as a consensus document titled Kampala Declaration, were announced on Saturday following the Summit extraordinary meeting of the African Union (AU) on CAADP in Kampala, the capital of Uganda.

Under this new framework, African countries have committed to scaling up sustainable food production by increasing agrifood production by 45% by 2035 and reducing post-harvest losses by 50%.

They also agreed to boost investment and financing in the agricultural sector, aiming to mobilize US$100 billion in public and private investment by 2035.

To achieve these goals, African countries need the collective commitment of governments, parliaments, food producers, the private sector and civil society to translate decisions into tangible results.

CAADP was created in 2003 to fight hunger and poverty. At its inception, African countries committed to allocate 10% of their national budget to agriculture, with a focus on increasing investment in this sector.

The three-day summit brought together more than 2,000 delegates, including agricultural experts, ministers and heads of state from over 40 AU members, to discuss the continent’s challenges and future in the sector agricultural.
