The Paris public prosecutor’s office has referred the matter to the sentencing judge who will set the terms of the electronic bracelet of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, definitively sentenced on December 18 to one year in prison in a wiretapping case, the prosecution said on Friday.
This is the first step in the procedure which should lead to the fitting of the bracelet of the former president, 69 years old.
The latter is currently on trial in Paris in another case, that of suspicions of Libyan financing of his 2007 presidential campaign.
In the wiretapping case, the Paris sentence enforcement judge (JAP) will now set a summons date for the former head of state.
During this meeting, Mr. Sarkozy will have to provide supporting documents that the judge will examine in order to determine the location of the summons (home) and the release times, during the week and at weekends.
Then, the JAP must issue an order which sets these terms, a decision which the convicted person cannot appeal. It will also determine the date of installation of the bracelet.
On December 18, the Court of Cassation rejected Nicolas Sarkozy’s appeal, making his conviction for corruption and influence peddling final to three years’ imprisonment, including one year spent under an electronic bracelet. He is also sentenced to three years of ineligibility.
As the procedure for the execution of this sentence is underway, he is not yet wearing his bracelet, which allowed him to spend his vacation in the Seychelles, with his wife, the singer Carla Bruni, and their daughter.
