On January 14, feminist activist Gabrielle Kane will be tried by the Le Mans judicial court for international kidnapping, after a one-year search warrant.
Wanted since 2023, she risks starting the year in prison if she appears at trial. She faces serious charges after legal proceedings between Senegal and France, which resulted in her being indicted by a French investigating judge.
During the hearing, Gabrielle Kane will have to answer to charges of kidnapping, an offense for which the prosecutor requested a three-year prison sentence and a fine of 50 million CFA francs. These accusations follow complex events involving her ex-partner, including the father of her daughter, who is a civil party.
Although she is expected at trial, Gabrielle Kane could choose not to appear, leaving room for proceedings in absentia. In this case, she could be sentenced in her absence, with an international arrest warrant issued against her. For her defense, Gabrielle Kane benefits from the assistance of feminist lawyer Pauline Rongier, recognized in France for her commitment to women’s rights, and several renowned lawyers. Among them, the criminal lawyer Alain Ifrah and Me Philippe Houillon, former deputy and president of the Law Commission in France. In Senegal, Me Ciré Clédor Ly and other lawyers also formed to defend the feminist before the French courts, after the decisions rendered in her favor by the Senegalese courts.
