The Jake Evans file is still exciting at the moment. Is “exciting” the right term? To a certain extent, yes.
We obviously wonder if the Canadian will be able to retain his services in the long term. After all, the way he plays, he contributes greatly to the CH’s success.
And as David Savard, Joel Armia and him are key players on the penalty kill, it would be interesting not to lose the core that makes the club strong one man short this year.
The first thing to watch out for is whether Evans will be traded at the deadline. Several clubs, including the Devils, will be in the running if CH ever places him on the market.
Obviously, if he signs a contract before March 7 (a la Samuel Montembeault last season), he will not leave. But if he doesn’t sign, he could well be shopped around.
According to what Pierre LeBrun reported in the most recent episode of the Radar podcast, we should not expect a first choice to be on the CH table in connection with Evans’ services at the trade deadline .
This is his opinion currently.
If we take into account that the CH would not exactly benefit from exchanging him for a other “ordinary” choice and the club is currently #DanceLeMix, one might think that a transaction is improbable.
Unless parity in the league – especially in the East, in fact – drives up the price to get your hands on Jake Evans due to the lack of players available on the market?
-And the second aspect to watch to know if the CH will keep him in the long term is obviously to know what contract he could sign with the Canadian in the coming months.
Whether by March 7, before July 1 or once the market opens, it will be interesting to see how much he wants to stay in Montreal.
Why do I say that? Because according to LeBrun, still in the context of his podcast with Anthony Desaulniers, if he wants to break the bank and hit a home run, it won’t be in Montreal that it’s going to happen.
He says that the CH has a precise framework for signing Evans and that he will not deviate from it.
Note: LeBrun did not say Evans wanted to break the bank. He said that if he wanted to break the bank, it would have to be done in the free agent market.
But I have the feeling that he really wants to sign in Montreal at the right price… and that the CH wants to keep him.
